That is why Advanced Dog Ownership Initiative (ADOi) exists. To promote responsible dog ownership through education, assessment, and accountability, ensuring that dogs and their handlers can live safely, calmly, and respectfully within modern society.
ADOi is built on the belief that successful dog ownership goes far beyond basic obedience. It combines sound theoretical knowledge, practical real world handling skills, and emotionally stable canine behaviour to create partnerships that function confidently in everyday life.
With a strong focus on welfare centred, ethical training methods, ADOi evaluates the relationship between dog and owner as a whole, not the pursuit of robotic perfection. By setting a clear, realistic standard for daily living, the initiative aims to improve public safety, enhance canine wellbeing, and empower owners to raise dogs that are socially compatible, well managed, and resilient in the face of real world challenges.

The Five-Step Journey
1. Enrol
Begin your journey by registering with an ADOi Approved Trainer who will guide you through the programme.
2. Learn
Receive structured training and support through the ADOi syllabus, designed to develop both owner understanding and practical handling skills.
3. Prepare
Build the knowledge and confidence needed to become a responsible, informed and capable dog owner.
4. Assess
Complete an independent assessment carried out by an ADOi Approved Examiner against the national standard.
5. Achieve
Earn the ADOi Award and demonstrate your commitment to responsible dog ownership.

Why ADOi exists and the hearts and minds behind it
The Advanced Dog Ownership Initiative was not created in a boardroom. It began through honest conversations between professionals who care deeply about dogs and who were increasingly concerned about the patterns they were seeing across society.
We saw overwhelmed owners facing behaviours they did not fully understand. We saw dogs placed in homes that did not match their temperament or needs. We saw families struggling…not from a lack of love, but from a lack of clear, consistent guidance. We saw an industry rich in opinion, yet fragmented in approach.
Too often, dogs were labelled as the problem when the real issue lay elsewhere. Often in misinformation, poor preparation, or systems that failed long before behaviour became visible.
As dog specialists and just as importantly, as dog owners and passionate dog lovers, we found ourselves increasingly concerned. Our conversations kept returning to the same troubling issues: the sharp rise in dog bites and dog-related fatalities, and the growing number of dogs entering rescue centres or being lost to behavioural euthanasia.
